Notes
  • The Harrowing of Hell comes from the Gospel of Nicodemus (as a PDF | as HTML | Wikipedia).
  • The Gospel of Nicodemus also gives names for the two malefactors crucified with Jesus. They are Dysmas and Gestas (aka Dismas and Hestas).
  • Dysmas and Gestas as characters in The Master and Margarita (extracts) by Mikhail Bulgakov. (A bit peripheral to the present subject but it is a book worth reading.)
  • Adtollite portas principes … is from Psalm 23.
